{"id":89336,"date":"2022-03-25T10:09:59","date_gmt":"2022-03-25T10:09:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.global-integration.com\/?p=89336"},"modified":"2026-02-19T13:50:19","modified_gmt":"2026-02-19T13:50:19","slug":"half-of-remote-workers-dont-feel-included-in-meetings-thats-not-ok","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.global-integration.com\/insights\/half-of-remote-workers-dont-feel-included-in-meetings-thats-not-ok\/","title":{"rendered":"Half of remote workers don&#8217;t feel included in meetings, that\u2019s not OK"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.global-integration.com\/virtual-teams-training\/virtual-meetings-training\/\">Running effective and engaging hybrid meeting<\/a>s is now a core leadership capability with 70% of meeting having at least some remote attendees and consuming about 40% of management time each week. Even for people working in the office 5 days per week their reality is that not everyone they collaborate with is in the same location, multi-site and international teams may all be in their own offices, but their meetings are virtual and therefore they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.global-integration.com\/insights\/virtual-team\/\">work in virtual teams<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Many of our clients are introducing policies where every meeting will have a virtual joining option.<\/p>\n<p>The Microsoft work trend index is a useful source of information on what&#8217;s really happening out there with vast data sets providing insights for all of us.\u00a0On meetings specifically, they found that half remote workers do not feel included in meetings, but only 27% of companies have created new hybrid meeting etiquettes to ensure that everyone feels included and engaged.<\/p>\n<p>Our only surprise is that these numbers are so low. When we demonstrate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.global-integration.com\/virtual-teams-training\/virtual-meetings-training\/\">hybrid facilitation techniques<\/a> in our programs it is extremely rare that people have seen any real attempt being made to engage remote and close participant systematically.<\/p>\n<p>We could go further and say that many entirely face to face meetings fail to create engagement and involvement, but that&#8217;s another blog.<\/p>\n<p>In our virtual and hybrid meetings training, the key challenge we address is <strong>creating an equivalent participant experience<\/strong> for those people in the room and those people joining remotely.<\/p>\n<p>If the majority of our meetings are going to be virtual or hybrid meetings, then we can&#8217;t accept high levels of disengagement, or that a significant number of remote workers do not feel included in meetings<\/p>\n<p>Some teams choose to have everyone, even those in the room, joining via laptop and use only the participation tools available to virtual meetings. This levels the playing field, but what&#8217;s the point then of bringing some people together in the same room. I\u00a0would be pretty unhappy if I had to commute to an office to sit in a room with other people but not interact with them except through Microsoft Teams!<\/p>\n<p>Some teams have gone back to using in-room facilitation techniques such as wall charts and post it notes, but these tend to exclude the virtual participants.<\/p>\n<p>The challenge is to develop virtual and hybrid facilitation techniques that allow the people in the room to experience the benefits of in person collaboration, the remote workers to feel included in meetings, and bridging techniques to bring them together so that their contributions can be combined.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the answer will be in technology, for example equipping meeting rooms with electronic whiteboards where people in the room can write on the board, and people joining remotely can add their contributions through the technology and both are displayed live.<\/p>\n<p>Technological change of this scale however will take a long time to roll its way through every meeting room to become familiar to every participant.<\/p>\n<p>In the short term most of us will need to rely on using our existing technological tools and different facilitation techniques.
