It is a common objection to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.global-integration.com\/insights\/matrix-management-guide\/\">matrix management.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Influence without authority and accountability without control\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/321499159?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"289\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>But behind both is an assumption that the best way to get things done is through power and control. Is that really how we want to run our organizations today? Can we really only trust others to do things if we have power over them?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.global-integration.com\/insights\/accountability-without-control-the-key-to-matrix-success\/\">Accountability without control<\/a> is normal in large organisations and always has been. Research shows that the managers that have more control than accountability tend to underperform and that those who can achieve their results through resources they control directly can be efficient but are often siloed.<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t have direct control over resources then you need to engage with others who do to get things done, you need to get out of your silos and show the value of your ideas. This is the essence of the matrix, not an unintended side-effect. However it does mean we need to change the way we spend our time with more effort on alignment and influence.<\/p>\n<p>In our training programs we explore the implications of this for objective setting, metrics and leadership.<\/p>\n<p>Using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.global-integration.com\/insights\/influence-without-authority\/\">influence rather than authority <\/a>makes you a better leader, it helps you develop a wider range of skills and is a style more valued by team members than directive leadership. This one is a strange objection, when you challenge people about it almost no one really wants to get things done just through hierarchical power, however it does reveal an underlying reliance on hierarchy which is often counter-productive.<\/p>\n<h2>How do you like to be led?<\/h2>\n<p>Reconciling this starts with the mindset. Ask yourself \u2013 would you really like to work for an organization where things only got done through power and control?
