With big companies, \u201cthere\u2019s a real inertia when you need to keep existing product growing and revenue stable\u201d, she recently explained to the 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2018\/10\/15\/innovation-dupont-ampere-revolution-ceo\/?xid=gn_editorspicks\"><em>Fortune<\/em> global forum in Toronto<\/a>.\u00a0 But in her view, breaking down big business units into small teams with a big vision can inspire innovation even in a corporate dinosaur.\u00a0\u00a0 To get people excited about that big vision, she recommends figuring out and clearly sharing what problem you want to solve. Or even better, \u201cHow do you want to change the world?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the same summit, Ellen Kullman, former CEO of DuPont shared that in her experience, \u201cculture norms, totems, are set in the middle of the company.\u00a0 Making sure those middle leaders are comfortable with the uncomfortable has to become part of the culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sounds good, but how do we actually do that?<\/p>\n<p>Organizational psychologists propose that organizational inertia can be broken down into three elements:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Insight inertia<\/li>\n<li>Psychological inertia<\/li>\n<li>Action inertia<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>That is, firstly we have to set ourselves the challenge of actively seeking new insights \u2013 from our end-users, clients, other sections of the business and external commentators.<\/p>\n<p>Secondly we have to be aware when our mindset might be holding us back: \u2018things are changing so fast\u2019, \u2018this way of doing things has always worked fine for me\u2019 or \u2018this looks too risky, I don\u2019t want to screw up\u2019 are all natural reactions \u2013 but will stop us innovating and evolving.
