{"id":21402,"date":"2018-12-11T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-12-11T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/global2020prd.wpengine.com\/insights\/right-to-disconnect\/"},"modified":"2020-05-11T09:15:45","modified_gmt":"2020-05-11T09:15:45","slug":"right-to-disconnect","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.global-integration.com\/insights\/right-to-disconnect\/","title":{"rendered":"Right to disconnect"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently French courts ruled that a French Rentokil Director had the \u2018right to disconnect\u2019 and ordered Rentokil to pay a 60,000 euro fine.\u00a0 However, it is also right to disconnect \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2018\/08\/180813160528.htm\">research<\/a> has found that when it comes to solving complex problems, we are more innovative and effective if we are \u2018intermittently on\u2019 versus \u2018always on\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Whether it\u2019s the Silicon Valley tech-giants sending their children to screen-free Wardorf-Steiner schools in droves, or French workers suing their bosses, I think we all have the sense that being slaves to our devices and the addictive pings that emanate from them is not good for our deep thinking.\u00a0 We need to actively give ourselves space for mulling, pondering and ultimately coming up with a creative rather than run-of-the-mill idea. It is easy to fall into the trap of \u201cjust got to get through this workload as fast as possible\u2026 react\u2026respond\u2026get it done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Innovation and creativity is what is ultimately going to help us win in the digital world. As the COO at Alibaba (where turnover has increased from $8.4 billion in 2014 to $39.9 billion in 2018) <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2018\/09\/alibaba-and-the-future-of-business\">argues<\/a>, \u201cDigital leaders no longer manage; rather, they enable workers to innovate\u2026 machine-learning algorithms take on much of the burden of incremental improvement by automatically making adjustments that increase systemwide efficiency. Thus, leaders\u2019 most important job is to cultivate creativity. Their mandate is to increase the success rate of innovation rather than improve the efficiency of the operation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yet executives now receive over 50,000 communications per year (vs. 25,000 in the previous decade), according to analysis by Bain &amp; Company. So it has to be a conscious effort on our part not to get sucked immediately into another round of emails or chat messages.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of allowing work to bleed into our home lives, research has found that unsurprisingly the manager\u2019s behaviour sets the tone, as shown by the research below:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22584\" src=\"https:\/\/www.global-integration.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/impact-of-managers.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1020\" height=\"607\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Although you may be sending out emails on a Sunday to help you get ahead with your week \u2013 without expecting your direct reports to respond right away \u2013 the research shows that they do in fact feel obliged to reply. \u00a0This is just as true for late-night emails during the week and the messages sent at 3am when you can\u2019t get to sleep.\u00a0 Unfortunately this doesn\u2019t ultimately help with productivity \u2013 Gallup has found that US workers who spend longer emailing outside of work hours experience substantially more stress than those that do it less.\u00a0\u00a0 As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/stephaniedenning\/2018\/05\/04\/what-is-the-cost-of-stress-how-stress-is-the-business-worlds-silent-killer\/#2977b1a26e06\">Stanford professor, Dr Pfeffer<\/a> explains, \u201cLong work hours produce fatigue and boredom, which lead to making more mistakes \u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So take a moment to think about what you can do to strategically disconnect this week.\u00a0 Which chunk of time can you ring-fence to think through a creative response to a sticky challenge?
