{"id":21325,"date":"2017-12-21T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-12-21T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/global2020prd.wpengine.com\/insights\/how-can-we-build-trust-in-virtual-and-transient-digital-teams\/"},"modified":"2022-04-29T11:48:17","modified_gmt":"2022-04-29T11:48:17","slug":"how-can-we-build-trust-in-virtual-and-transient-digital-teams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.global-integration.com\/insights\/how-can-we-build-trust-in-virtual-and-transient-digital-teams\/","title":{"rendered":"How can we build trust in virtual and transient digital teams?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The glue that holds teams virtual teams together is trust.\u00a0 This fact is overwhelmingly backed up by the research: a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27123697\"><u>meta-analysis<\/u><u><\/u><\/a> of 112 academic studies covering over 7,700 teams found that people\u2019s trust in their colleagues within a team was significantly correlated with team performance, over and above their trust in the team leader and past team performance.<\/p>\n<p>Secondly, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27228105\"><u>review of 52 studies<\/u><\/a> covering 12,615 individuals in 1,850 teams found that the relationship between team trust and team performance was stronger in virtual teams as compared to face-to-face teams.<\/p>\n<p>Yet when we work with people remotely, or they\u2019re from different cultures, different parts of the business or even different companies \u2013 we tend to treat them as resources &#8211; to be contacted only when we need something.\u00a0 When we\u2019re co-located and from the same department, we treat them as people (and as a result tend to trust each other much more).<\/p>\n<p>So how can we build trust in remote and virtual teams?<\/p>\n<p>By creating and following what psychologists call \u2018normative actions\u2019 or standard ways of working.\u00a0 As well as getting the job done more effectively, we will swiftly build trust. <a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/2013-06956-005\"><u>Psychologists studied 68 temporary virtual teams<\/u><\/a> that had no face-to-face interaction, and found that setting and monitoring standards to guide team performance (such as goals, schedules, technology-use norms), along with early beliefs that other team members were trustworthy, allowed teams to weather the inevitable set-backs and led to higher team performance.<\/p>\n<p>Building virtual communities is also extremely important as it allows a sense of shared identity, social bonds and therefore trust to form.<\/p>\n<p>Another solution is to make sure your work is freely available on online collaboration tools to those that want to search for it \u2013 rather than \u2018pushing\u2019 it unrequested onto others. \u00a0John Stepper, a managing director at Deutsche Bank, created the bank\u2019s Communities of Practice electronic discussion forums, in which 100,000 employees now converse with colleagues in similar roles around the world. Stepper calls this type of collaboration \u201cworking out loud.\u201d Keeping this kind of \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27228105\"><u>record in the cloud<\/u><\/a>\u2019 has also been found to reduce the imperative for lots of trust in virtual teams, as people can always check back on what was said or agreed upon.<\/p>\n<p>This is particularly important for digital, fast-paced, transient teams where there is no time for \u2018forming, norming, storming\u2019.
