Fancy taking part in another organizational change initiative? Thought not.<\/p>\n

But we are now in an era of \u2018always on transformation\u2019, according to Jim Hennerling, Boston Consulting Group\u2019s Organizational Change Expert, with companies having to constantly adapt to keep up with rapid globalization and digitalization.\u00a0 Given we can\u2019t hide from change, Hemerling shares his insights on how we can make a business transformation energizing rather than exhausting in his fascinating TED talk<\/a> – now viewed more than 1.6m times.<\/p>\n

Definitely worth taking the 13 minutes 20 seconds to watch it in full \u2013 but if you don\u2019t have time here\u2019s the one-minute quick read version:<\/p>\n

He argues that the key thing is to \u2018put people first\u2019, with these five imperatives:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Inspire through purpose<\/strong> \u2013 think Lego with their mission to \u2018inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow\u2019 and their ability to frame yet another global expansion as the chance to inspire more children.<\/li>\n
  2. Go all in<\/strong> \u2013 not just cost cutting but thinking about what initiatives to put in place to win long term; and what investments to make now in leaders and talent for the future.<\/li>\n
  3. Give people the skills and capabilities they need for the transformation<\/strong> \u2013 for example, the collaborative behaviors to deliver a seamless end-to-end journey for your customer.<\/li>\n
  4. Instil a culture of continuous learning<\/strong> \u2013 instead of silos and a static mindset of \u2018I know best\u2019, moving to a \u2018growth mindset\u2019 where everyone aims to listen, learn and bring out the best in others.<\/li>\n
  5. Be an inclusive leader<\/strong> \u2013 hold people accountable for results, be directive when necessary but also solicit ideas and keep the debate open.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    These five imperatives very much mirror our experience of what leaders need to focus on when leading a successful transformation to matrix working. We\u2019ve developed the following 4S model to help leaders navigate the change and keep people excited about the journey:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • clarify and communicate the strategy<\/strong> and the reasons for the change<\/li>\n
    • create the formal structure <\/strong>and informal networks and groups to deliver on this<\/li>\n
    • align the business systems<\/strong> and processes -including people processes<\/li>\n
    • build the skills<\/strong> and culture needed to succeed in a more complex environment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      For example, one of our global IT clients specifically rewards people who can give examples of where they have shared information outside their function, and also where they\u2019ve asked questions outside of their team. In this way they are actively rewarding the right type of collaboration (not just more meetings).<\/p>\n
