Unnecessary people at meetings: the stand in<\/h2>\n

In our free “Better Meetings Campaign”<\/a> ,\u00a0we are helping people to reduce the number and improve the quality of their face-to-face and virtual meetings.<\/p>\n

As part of this we are looking at how to get rid of unnecessary participants at your meetings.<\/p>\n

In our Better Meetings Survey we found that most people think that 25% of participants or more were unnecessary to the content of\u00a0 their meetings.<\/p>\n

Here is one you may recognise, the stand in<\/a>. Stan has been sent along because his boss couldn’t make the meeting and sent him instead.<\/p>\n

In some cases Stan may be able to do an adequate job.<\/p>\n

However, if he is replacing someone who is critical to the success of the meeting or the implementation of the decisions made, then you may need to make sure that the right people are in the room.<\/p>\n

It’s also likely that if people send stand-ins they are telling you that your meeting is not a priority for them. Perhaps you need to redesign the content and quality of your meeting to encourage the right people to attend.<\/p>\n

Having the right people present is an important element of running a successful meeting.<\/p>\n
