{"id":20905,"date":"2013-09-23T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2013-09-23T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/global2020prd.wpengine.com\/insights\/sharing-economy-throw-down-engaging-people\/"},"modified":"2020-05-11T15:52:50","modified_gmt":"2020-05-11T15:52:50","slug":"sharing-economy-throw-down-engaging-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.global-integration.com\/insights\/sharing-economy-throw-down-engaging-people\/","title":{"rendered":"Sharing Economy Throw-down: Engaging People"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Social Media Week: Sharing Economy Throw-down: Engaging People\u00a0#SMWldn<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13552\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13552\" style=\"width: 190px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-13552\" src=\"https:\/\/www.global-integration.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/IMG_1288-190x110.jpg\" alt=\"people talking\" width=\"190\" height=\"110\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13552\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Conversations at Social Media Week<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Today\u2019s Sharing Economy Throw-down as part of Social Media Week London looked promising, with a panel that consisted of Gareth Davies , Waggener Edstrom; David Keene, Google; Doug Shaw, What Goes Around; and Luis Suarez, IBM and was moderated by Andy Bargery (Klaxon Marketing\/London Bloggers Meet Up) in the beautiful offices of furniture designers Hermann Miller in London.<\/p>\n<p>The conversations didn\u2019t take us quite where expected, but were, nonetheless, interesting. The following is a summary of some of the main themes \u2013 the audio should be available soon. The fact that these themes were discussed doesn\u2019t mean that we at Global Integration agree with all of them. Indeed, I expect (and hope) my colleagues to have a thing or two to say in response!<\/p>\n<p>The panel started off in a very promising way. Shaw argued that connections give us meaning (and social media enables those connections). Davies, meanwhile, suggested that the blurred lines between work and home lives will bring increased mindfulness to our online interactions as we struggle to keep parts of our lives &#8216;private&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Suarez, by contrast, suggested that what we share defines who we are and that the main challenge of the collaborative economy is opening up \u2013 knowledge, traditionally, is power. The loss of control that comes with collaboration, and social media use in particular, is a major management challenge.<\/p>\n<p>Recurrent issues throughout the panel discussion were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Work life balance \u2013 Knowledge workers are always &#8216;on&#8217;, resulting in a strong need to focus. Davies argued that we no longer have a work life balance, we have a work life continuum to manage.<\/li>\n<li>Attention management: making sense of the huge volumes of data (information) and keeping productivity in context.<\/li>\n<li>Digital footprints: The separation of personal and work identities and whether it\u2019s feasible; and to what extent our online lives are viewed by businesses (and how they react to them).<\/li>\n<li>Working together can be hard: collaborative environments require honesty and openness \u2013 and they need strong management to make it work.<\/li>\n<li>Trust: it&#8217;s hard to earn and easy to lose.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Driving the changes into a more \u2018collaborative\u2019 economy are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Human behaviour: it&#8217;s hard to deny support to others.<\/li>\n<li>The corporate world has often incentivised different, unnatural behaviours. Collaboration fulfils a human need.<\/li>\n<li>The work place has &#8216;consumerised&#8217;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Adopting a more \u2018open\u2019 workplace needs a changed mindset:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Trust needs developing, and power\/control addressing.<\/li>\n<li>Sales environments \u00a0can be competitive \u2013 creating a win or lose (someone gets a bonus, someone gets fired) when &#8216;together&#8217; could be better.<\/li>\n<li>The corporate firewall will have to be demolished except for high IP material (sharing being a valuable currency).<\/li>\n<li>Openness and transparency come with challenges, notably feelings\/emotions.<\/li>\n<li>Most companies reward for <i>not<\/i> sharing (knowledge is power and those with the knowledge are rewarded) and \u00a0create targets that in turn encourage bad behaviours.<\/li>\n<li>Pay in a company should be more transparent.<\/li>\n<li>CEOs need to be more open and adopt social media.<\/li>\n<li>Company values (if it\u2019s possible for a company to have collective values) and behaviours need to be embedded in the recruitment process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some things will remain unchanged. Shaw suggests that work <i>is<\/i> a place &#8211; somewhere to go. \u00a0Social media, he argues, is a place \u2013 and allows us to be in lots of places at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>So what do you think?
