{"id":20779,"date":"2012-11-12T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-11-12T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/global2020prd.wpengine.com\/insights\/determinants-of-trust-in-multicultural-global-virtual-teams\/"},"modified":"2020-05-11T13:46:31","modified_gmt":"2020-05-11T13:46:31","slug":"determinants-of-trust-in-multicultural-global-virtual-teams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.global-integration.com\/insights\/determinants-of-trust-in-multicultural-global-virtual-teams\/","title":{"rendered":"Determinants of Trust in Multicultural Global Virtual Teams"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-8921\" title=\"trust\" src=\"https:\/\/www.global-integration.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/trust-330x219.jpg\" alt=\"Trust image\" width=\"330\" height=\"219\" \/>I read an article this week that looked at the determinants of trust in virtual teams.\u00a0The reprint I was given\u00a0did not make it clear which journal it is from, but the authors are from two academic institutions in Finland and one in New Zealand \u2013 A strange combination!\u00a0 The work was carried out in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>For me their <em>most interesting<\/em> findings, which are somewhat contradictory, include:<\/p>\n<p>1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The more collectivist the culture the more trusting the team will be.\u00a0 This suggests that collectivist cultures like Japan, Germany or Sweden for example will find virtual team working easier than individualistic cultures like the USA or UK.<\/p>\n<p>2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The level of trust was independent of the cultural diversity of the team.\u00a0 So more diverse teams do no better and no worse than homogenous teams.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers had tested seven different hypotheses using a sample of 59 global virtual teams.\u00a0Here are the hypotheses they tested with respect to the perceived level of trust and what they found out: &#8211;<\/p>\n<p><em>Hypothesis 1.<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 That in virtual teams comprised of individualists and collectivists there will be a positive relationship between the collectivism levels and trust \u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<strong>was strongly supported<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Hypothesis 2.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There will a negative relationship between cultural diversity and trust &#8211;\u00a0<strong>was not supported<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Hypothesis 3.\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Cultural Diversity will be more important than demographic diversity &#8211;\u00a0<strong>was contradicted<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Hypothesis 4.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The collectivism level will be more important than the level of cultural diversity \u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<strong>receives support<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Hypothesis 5.\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There will be a positive relationship between task interdependence and trust \u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<strong>receives strong support<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Hypothesis 6.<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Relationship conflict will be negatively related to trust \u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<strong>is supported<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Hypothesis 7.\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Task conflict will be negatively related to trust &#8211;\u00a0<strong>is also supported<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The research was undertaken by Peter Zettinig (from the Turku School of Economics), Elizabeth Rose (from the Helsinki School of Economics), and by Audra Mockaitis (from the School of Marketing and International Business at Victoria University.<\/p>\n<h3>Editors notes: reference for paper<\/h3>\n<p>THE DETERMINANTS OF TRUST IN MULTICULTURAL GLOBAL VIRTUAL TEAMS<br \/>\nAUTHOR(S)MOCKAITIS, AUDRA I.; ROSE, ELIZABETH L.; ZETTINIG, PETER<br \/>\nPUB.
