Matrix Management case studies
Clients of our training and consulting services often ask us for matrix management case studies and examples of how companies have implemented matrix organizational structures.
For a comprehensive summary of the challenges and solutions, take a look at our detailed practical matrix management guide.
Much of our client work is confidential and protected by non-disclosure agreements, so we’re unable to publish these as case studies. We also generally don’t recommend relying too heavily on the traditional “case study methodology,” as it often spends too much time analysing what another organization did. Every company has its own culture, history and unique circumstances, which makes it difficult to transfer learning directly from one organization to another.
Instead, we prefer to create common scenarios and practical tools that clients can use to find the right solution for their own organization. These tools embed the relevant learning gathered from a wide range of organizations.
That said, we know many people still find it helpful to read matrix management case studies to see what others have learned. If you’re planning an implementation or looking to improve your matrix management approach, reviewing these can be a useful starting point. Harvard offers several summaries of case studies (now paid), including:
- ABB
- Acer America
- Becton Dickinson
- Corning Glass
- Eli Lilly
- General Motors
- Novartis Pharma
- Pinnacle Mutual Life Insurance Co.
- Procter & Gamble
- Philips
